Let me take you on a journey to one of the most memorable days of my life - April 26th, 2021. It all began around 8 pm when I noticed the first sign that labor was on its way – a subtle indicator called a "birth show." Thanks to the Hypnobirthing course I had taken, I recognized this as a sign that my baby was eager to make their appearance.
At that point, I hadn't experienced any surges (those intense contractions that signal active labor), so I went about my evening routine, had dinner, and went to bed like any other day. Then, around 3 am, I woke up with a distinct sensation in my uterus. This was it, the beginning of those surges I'd been anticipating. They were irregular at first, so I managed to go back to sleep and woke up again around 7 am.
Between 7 am and noon, those surges continued, but they were still somewhat sporadic. I wasn't entirely sure if this was the real deal, so I decided to download a surge tracker on my phone to monitor the situation. Meanwhile, my husband tried to keep the mood light by putting on a funny movie (though I can't recall which one it was).
About an hour later, my trusty tracker advised me to take a shower and eat a small meal, indicating that it might be time to head to the hospital within the next hour. I followed the instructions, but before we could leave, my husband wanted to take our dog, Archie, for a walk. I decided to join him. However, during the walk, the surges intensified, and I couldn't walk much further. I knew it was time to head to the hospital.
In the car, I played my relaxation tracks to keep calm and composed during each surge. We arrived at the hospital around 3 pm, but initially, the medical staff didn't think I was in active labor. They checked my heart rate and asked me to wait in the waiting room. Remarkably, I remained completely relaxed and in control throughout this process.
A private midwife from the hospital, who was ending her shift, noticed me sitting calmly in the waiting room. She came over to say hello and offered invaluable advice. She suggested that I sit in a quiet corner, away from the busy waiting area, and use my tense machine – which I promptly did. Throughout each surge, my husband was there, helping me with my breathing and providing light touch massages.
After about three hours of waiting, my surges became closer and more intense. My husband advocated for them to check me again, and this time, it was clear that our baby was on the way. My mobility was limited, so they wheeled me to the birthing suite in a wheelchair. I had to wait briefly in another examination room before entering the birthing room.
Around 10 minutes later, I began to feel exhausted and queasy. My husband recognized this as the transition stage, which meant our baby would be arriving soon. He reassured me to keep breathing and stay focused on my relaxation tracks.
I didn't have to wait much longer. They wheeled me to the birthing suite, and on the way, my membranes released. Once I arrived on the bed in a lateral position, I instinctively guided my baby, Damian, down with the surges, and he was born - 27th of April 08:15pm.
With a mix of joy and humor, I turned to my husband and said, "Was that it? I can do that over and over again!" The most incredible part? I didn't need any painkillers or an epidural. It was just my body and my baby working together seamlessly.
Throughout the entire labor, I never once felt out of control or anxious, thanks to the Hypnobirthing course I had attended. Just 20 minutes later, I naturally birthed my placenta, and my birthing journey was complete.
My hope in sharing this story is to inspire and empower other expectant moms. Hypnobirthing allowed me to embrace childbirth with serenity and strength, and I'm here to support you on your own path to a positive birth experience.
